Writing an Acceptable First Draft for Prof. Schaefer

  • Refer to at least ten experimental papers in the introduction.
  • It is likely that most people who look at your paper will only study the figures. Make sure they are present and readily understandable to the casual reader. If you do a good job on the figures, you will convince people to study the rest of the paper.
  • Do not assume your readers are as familiar with your results as you are.
  • Never use the word calculation.
  • Preferred designation of methods is DZP CCSD, basis set before theorectical technique.
  • Never use the C,N,O (9s5p/5s3p) basis set - always the (10s6p/5s3p) for the triple-zeta.
  • Whenever our codes are used, make reference to Psi, distributed by PSITECH Inc, Watkinsville, GA.
  • Never include the phrase "a theoretical study of" in your title, unless the chemical problem investigated is universally acknowledged to be extremely important.
  • Include exact numbers of configurations in largest CI or CC wavefunctions. This helps future workers to attempt to precisely reproduce your results.
  • No section or subsection of the paper should be more than five pages long. You need to help the readers find the material they want.
  • Papers must end with a section labelled "Conclusions" or "Concluding Remarks."
  • All CCC papers must acknowledge Federal grant support of some kind.
  • Please do not use parentheses within parentheses; use brackets in place of outside parentheses.
  • When a table makes reference to more than two different theoretical molecular structures, a sketch of each structure can be very helpful to the reader.
  • Explicitly include all authors the first time you refer to a work.
  • To maximize the scientific impact of the work, its always a good idea to send preprints to four or five experimentalists with greatest interest in our predictions.
